3xxx Series
Aluminum-Manganese Alloys
Overview
Good corrosion resistance, moderate strength, excellent formability
Applications
Common Alloys
Properties
Manufacturing Process
Step 1
Raw Material
Aluminum ingots and manganese master alloy additions (1.0–1.8 % Mn) are prepared and weighed to specification.
Step 2
Melting & Alloying
Mn is dissolved into the melt at 720–760 °C, providing solid-solution strengthening without sacrificing corrosion resistance.
Step 3
DC Casting
Molten alloy is cast into large rolling slabs via Direct Chill process with careful cooling rate control.
Step 4
Hot Rolling
Multi-pass hot rolling at 450–500 °C breaks down the cast structure and forms Al₆Mn dispersoid particles that control grain growth.
Step 5
Cold Rolling
Further rolling at room temperature achieves precise final thickness, improved surface quality, and H-temper work hardening.
Step 6
Final Anneal & Inspection
Controlled annealing for O-temper products delivers peak formability. Chemical, mechanical, and surface inspection complete the process.
